Deputy Custodian of Imam Reza shrine attends ceremony to change Imam Hussain shrine’s flag

The Deputy Custodian of Imam Reza shrine in the northeastern Iranian city of Mashhad has attended the ritual of changing the flag of Imam Hussain shrine in the Iraqi city of Karbala to mark the start of the mourning month of Muharram (the 1st month on the lunar calendar).

The red flags of Imam Hussain shrine are always replaced with black ones to herald the start of Muharram, which marks the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussain – the 3rd Shia Imam and grandson of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) – in 680 AD.
The Deputy Custodian of Imam Reza shrine, Mostafa Feizi, has also taken part in the ceremony, which got underway with thousands of pilgrims in attendance.
Also, the head of Iraqi Endowments Council, the custodian of Imam Hussain shrine, some prominent Iraqi religious scholars, etc. participated in the ritual.
