From Specialized Medical Care to Welcoming Health Pilgrims

Razavi Hospital, a super-specialty medical center affiliated with Astan Quds Razavi, is pursuing the expansion of healthcare services and welcoming domestic and international patients by relying on advanced diagnostic and treatment infrastructure, specialized personnel, and a service-oriented approach. Its achievements—from successful participation in health tourism to its focus on patient safety and protecting the dignity of those seeking care—form part of its medical identity.

According to Atabe News, Razavi Hospital’s selection as the National Exemplary Health Services Exporter for four consecutive years is one of its major achievements in health tourism. According to Dr. Mohsen Mehvar, CEO of Razavi Super-Specialty Hospital, this success stems from the hospital’s specialized capabilities, diagnostic and treatment facilities, and ability to attract and serve international patients.

He put the hospital’s annual foreign-currency revenue from health tourism at approximately $4 million, adding that this capacity could be expanded by strengthening international relations and organizing the process of attracting patients.

The hospital’s CEO said that Iraq, Afghanistan, and Tajikistan are among the countries from which its international patients come. “Paying attention to these patients’ cultural and welfare needs is crucial to us. Everything from coordinating travel and accommodation to accommodating the food preferences of different cultures and ensuring transparency in treatment costs plays a role in creating a positive patient experience.”

Mehvar added that the hospital describes health tourists as “health pilgrims,” because people who come for medical services also travel to Mashhad with the intention of visiting the radiant holy shrine of Imam Reza (AS).

Extensive Medical Capabilities: From Cancer Care to Nuclear Medicine

With an area of approximately 40 hectares and nearly 200,000 square meters of built-up space, Razavi Hospital is one of Mashhad’s major medical centers. According to its CEO, the hospital has around 350 active beds, with another 110 beds ready for use. The addition of these beds would bring its capacity to approximately 460.

The hospital provides specialized services in cardiology, brain and spinal surgery, infertility treatment, and cancer care. Mohsen Mehvar also referred to its nuclear medicine and radiopharmaceutical production capabilities, which are used in diagnosing and treating certain diseases, including cancer.

He said that the development of specialized equipment and services remains on the hospital’s agenda. He also pointed to efforts to obtain a license to establish a kidney transplant service, noting that the relevant legal procedures are underway.

Patient Safety: An Achievement Beyond Medical Equipment

Receiving the national Safe Hospital designation is another achievement highlighted by Mehvar. He stressed that hospital safety is not limited to structural integrity or equipment; it encompasses a range of indicators, from the safety of the environment and staff to preventing harm to patients and controlling health-related risks.

Referring to the “green hospital” approach, the CEO also discussed waste management, wastewater treatment, and compliance with environmental considerations. These, he said, are part of the medical center’s responsibilities. From this perspective, service quality is reflected not only in treatment outcomes but also in the safety and health of the environment in which care is provided.

Protecting Patients’ Rights: Quality Treatment and Transparent Costs

Mehvar considers the hospital’s affiliation with Astan Quds Razavi a foundation for strengthening a culture of service and attention to patients’ rights. He said the hospital strives to provide specialized services in accordance with financial regulations, control costs, and prevent patients from being burdened with unreasonable expenses.

The Razavi Family: 1,600 Employees Serving Patients

According to the hospital’s CEO, approximately 1,600 people work at Razavi Hospital. Nearly 70 percent are employed in clinical departments, while 30 percent work in support services.

Emphasizing the role of all employees—from doctors and nurses to service and technical staff—Mehvar described them as the “Razavi family.” He added: “The large Razavi Hospital is a family, and the quality of its services depends on the cooperation of every member. Improving staff welfare facilities, creating a sports area, establishing a nursery, and addressing the livelihood and welfare needs of this large family are also among the measures we have pursued at the hospital.”

Razavi Identity: Connecting Medical Expertise with a Culture of Service

Mehvar went on to say that the hospital’s affiliation with Astan Quds Razavi makes working there a responsibility that goes beyond providing medical treatment. This responsibility, he explained, must be reflected in staff conduct, respect for patients, support for their families, and preservation of the dignity of everyone who seeks care—serving in the realm of health and treatment as one would serve at the Razavi Shrine.

He explained: “Illness is already difficult enough for patients and their families. A medical center must strive to ensure that, beyond the illness itself, those seeking care do not face additional problems and worries. Providing accommodation for the companions of some patients and paying attention to their needs are also part of this approach.”
