1400-year-old Holy Quran copy ‘Mashhad Razavi’ unveiled

The Custodian of Imam Reza shrine has unveiled a copy of the Holy Quran – the most complete collection of Quranic manuscripts dating back to 1400 years ago (1st century AH).

In a ceremony in Qods Hall of the shrine with a group of Quranic and Shia scholars in attendance, the researcher, Morteza Kariminia, gave an account of the Quranic copy.

Saying that the remaining manuscripts from the early Islamic centuries were documents for better understanding of the old copy, Kariminia noted: “The older manuscripts are more valuable and explanatory in understanding events connected with dates of writing and recitation”.

He said that some of the documents corroborate our past knowledge, and replenish our fragmented understanding.

The Quranic researcher added that the ‘Mashhad Razavi’ copy was the most complete copy of the Holy Quran in 252 pages including some 95 percent the Quranic text.

Based on Carbon-14 dating, the major part of the copy was written very early during the 1rst century AH on animal skin in Median or Kufa, later transferred to Khorasan (northeast Iran), and donated to Imam Reza shrine in late 5th century AH.

Kariminia further said that the facsimile of the Quranic copy ‘Mashhad Razavi’ was translated into Arabic and English by Alulbait Institute in 2022.
