As late Sheikh Sadough has mentioned in his Oyoun Akhbar al-Reza almost one thousand years ago, there was a woman from Noghan who came to the holy shrine every day and did some maintaining and serving jobs in vicinity of the holy grave.
This dictum of Sheikh Sadough which is referred to as the oldest history of a servant’s job inside the shrine has a woman as its main player. Women also played a role in the preservation and protection of the shrine in the following years. They were active in civil development of the complex as well.
Empress “Goharshad”, the founder of Goharshad Mosque, is one of the most prominent active women in the history of Mashhad. Some divide the holy city into two different ones before and after her services. Except Goharshad, we can mention "Fatemeh Tousi", during the Mongol period who became companion of the mother of the emperor and used this position to prevent Mashhad and the shrine from attacking.
Presence of female pilgrims in Razavi holy shrine, has been widespread since the very beginning of the complex to the extent that officials of the shrine were forced to create separate pilgrimage and worship spaces for them. One of these famous places of pilgrimage was Riaz Mosque in the northeastern side of the holy grave. This mosque was changed to Dar al-Feiz portico. An existing ancient document shows that a decree was issued for a woman as servant of this mosque. There are many documents of this kind divulging servant role of women in Imam Reza shrine in early years of the complex.
