Azeri-speaking women attend “Ashura Epic” mourning ceremony at Imam Reza Srine

Cultural gathering at Imam Reza Shrine in Mashhad, northeast Iran, highlights lessons of Karbala and women’s role in preserving Islamic values.

During the first ten days of Muharram, the sacred atmosphere of Imam Reza Shrine hosted the “Ashura Epic” mourning ceremony, attended by a group of distinguished Azeri-speaking women.
Organized by the Central Asia division of the Deputy Office for Non-Iranian Pilgrims’ Affairs, the event was held in the Melal Hall and aimed to honor the legacy of Imam Hussein and reflect on the spiritual lessons of Karbala.
The ceremony began with a Quranic recitation by Zahra Heydarova from the Republic of Azerbaijan, followed by the special Salawat for Imam Reza, as participants offered greetings and condolences to the Imam.
The keynote speaker, Ms. Alizadeh, delivered a heartfelt address on “Lessons of Ashura for Today’s Generation,” emphasizing Imam Hussein’s sacrifice for faith and truth.
“When the foundations of religion are threatened, one must be willing to give everything to protect them”, she noted.
She explained: “Imam Hussein rose against tyrant Yazid when he saw Islamic values being openly violated, sacrificing his life, family, and companions to uphold divine principles”.
The program also featured a poetic recitation by Azeri poetess Khiyalah Ismailova, and concluded with the recitation of Ziyarat (Supplication) Ashura by Ms. Mirbeyim Hosseinli.
