On the eve of Imam Javad’s martyrdom anniversary, Imam Reza Shrine (northeast Iran) has been draped in black banners as a symbol of mourning, with a black flag raised atop the sacred dome. Imam Javad was the ninth of the Twelve Imams of Shia Muslims.
