In a meeting with managers, teachers and students from Goharshad Mosque Seminary, Ayat. Ahmad Marvi highlighted the mosque's central role in community interactions and scholarly debates throughout Khorasan’s (northeastern Iran) history.
Goharshad Mosque has been a cultural and civilizational hub, initiating many scientific and social transformations. Historically, it served as a key base for scholars' social actions and their engagement with the public.
The Custodian of AQR cited the emphasis by the Leader of the Islamic Revolution on revitalizing the mosque's activities. “Before the revolution, prominent scholars held classes at Goharshad Mosque, which also hosted major ceremonies. It was a hub for political, ideological, and scientific discussions among clerics and students. These functions should be revived, making the mosque a seminary where people can interact with students”.
Ayat. Marvi, who is also a Supreme Council member of Mashhad’s seminary, stressed the importance of academic discussions near Imam Reza shrine, stating, “Having a seminary and academic sessions at the shrine is essential, and this is a priority”.
He further highlighted the unique feature of Goharshad Mosque being adjacent to Imam Reza shrine in the northeastern Iranian city of Mashhad, describing it as a blessing.
“The shrine’s spiritual atmosphere enhances visitors' faith, creating an environment for the highest human virtues”, the official explained.
He encouraged students to use this sacred space for academic discussions, as its spiritual ambiance aids in better understanding.
Ayat. Marvi recommended utilizing the shrine’s space for study and interaction with the public, noting that “The historical reasons for placing seminaries in city centers laid the groundwork for the shrine to be an ideal place for fostering interactions, helping students develop communication skills”.
The Custodian emphasized that holding knowledge circles and answering religious questions are opportunities to establish connections between students and the public, acquainting them with people’s issues and questions.
Also, several teachers and students of Goharshad Mosque Seminary shared their views on strengthening the seminary's academic foundation at the start of the meeting.
Emphasizing the need to revive the diverse religious, scientific, social, and cultural functions of the historic Goharshad Mosque, the Custodian of Astan Quds Razavi (AQR) urged active participation from seminaries, scholars, and students.
