Imam Reza holy shrine’s central library preserves 175-year-old French book

Lead-printed 175-year-old French book of "History of Sultan Jalal al-Din Mangburni, Sultan of Khwarazm," is kept in the rare items section of the central library of Astan Quds Razavi, says Mohammad Reza Taziki, expert of the printed book repository of the center.

“This book that is known as "Sultan Jalal al-Din Khwarazmshah," was printed in 1850 in French language by Ernest Leroux publishing house in Paris,” Taziki said.
He added: “The original version of this book was written in Arabic by Mohammad Nasavi. The work was translated into Persian in the 7th century AH under the title of Biography of Jalal al-Din Mangburni."
According to Taziki, this book is essentially the story of Sultan Jalal al-Din, son of Sultan Muhammad Khwarazmshah, depicting the account of an eleven-year period, i.e. from the beginning of the Mongol invasion to the death of Sultan Jalal al-Din Khwarazmshah, as well as Nasavi's memories of events during the era”.
Referring to the importance of the book, expert of the central library, said: “Our findings about news of the Khwarazmshah dynasty are very limited. This lack of sources is partly due to the brevity of this dynasty's independence and also absence of historians and writers.  Accuracy of Nasavi in recording events, his proximity to the government of Sultan Jalal al-Din Khwarazmshah, his evaluation of events, and existence of few works regarding Khwarazmshah rule have given this work a special place among sources of this period”.
Taziki further noted: “Nasavi works can be considered among the oldest memoirs and autobiographies”.
It is worth mentioning that more than 22,100 copies of lead-printed books are kept in Central Library of Astan Quds Razavi, of which two thousand copies are in various foreign languages, including French.
