Sheikh Baha’i: A timeless role model for contemporary scholars

Head of the Sacred Shrines Social Studies Group at the Islamic Research Foundation of Astan Quds Razavi, highlighted Sheikh Baha’i as one of the most distinguished scholars of Islam and Shi’ism, praising him as an exemplary figure for modern intellectuals.

Speaking on the occasion of Sheikh Baha’i’s commemoration day, Dr. Morteza Enferadi highlighted the legacy of this prominent scholar, emphasizing his vast contributions to various fields of knowledge.
He cited the teachings of Imam Reza, who encouraged the spread of knowledge, stating, “May God have mercy on he who revives our cause… learning our sciences and teaching them to others”.
 “Imam Reza’s emphasis on scholarship transformed Imam Reza Shrine into a hub of Islamic academia, attracting generations of scholars”, he noted.
Many luminaries, including Sheikh Baha’i, were laid to rest near the shrine as a testament to its scholarly significance.  
Sheikh Baha’i, born in 953 AH (approximately 1546 CE), was a master of jurisprudence, hadith, mathematics, geometry, medicine, architecture, poetry, philosophy, logic, physics, mysticism, and astronomy.
His teachings influenced renowned students, such as Mulla Sadra and Mohammad-Taqi Majlesi.
Among his many contributions, he was one of the first scholars to discuss Earth’s movement. His achievements in astronomy were so remarkable that UNESCO designated 2009 as the Year of Astronomy and Sheikh Baha’i.
Throughout his life, Sheikh Baha’i authored nearly 100 books and scientific treatises across various disciplines.
He passed away in Isfahan at the age of 76 and, in accordance with his will, was buried in Imam Reza Shrine in the very location where he taught. His resting place, now known as Sheikh Baha’i Portico, remains an enduring site of reverence.
