Rare 122-year-old French scientific exploration book preserved at AQR central library

The lead-type printed French book “Practical Guide for Naturalists and Scientific Travelers (Scientific Explorer),” published 122 years ago, is housed in the Rare Books Section of the Central Library at Astan Quds Razavi (AQR).

Mohammadreza Taziki, an expert in the printed books repository at the Central Library, described the book as an illustrated work with an index and reference tables. It spans 330 pages in French and was published in Paris in 1903.
The book was authored by G. Capus, a doctor of natural sciences and director of scientific missions in the East, alongside Georges Bohn, a doctor of sciences and associate professor at the Faculty of Sciences in Paris.
It serves as a guide to scientific tools and equipment essential for explorers and naturalists. The book functions as a manual for laboratory-based scientific exploration.
One notable example in the third chapter features an image of a specialized glass container with a lid, designed for transporting live aquatic organisms and small fish during expeditions without endangering their survival.
The book’s introduction states that this is its third edition, documenting Capus’s scientific journeys and experiences in ancient Turkestan region. Bohn, the co-author, was a distinguished naturalist familiar with various research methods, including animal histology.
According to Taziki, “The book provides clear and concise answers to questions related to nature exploration and ecotourism. Written in a straightforward style, it delivers comprehensive information efficiently, ensuring that travelers can navigate challenges in nature with confidence”.
AQR’s Central Library houses over 22,100 lead-type printed books, including 2,000 foreign-language editions, with a significant collection in French.
