In preparation for Eid al-Adha, the sacred precincts of Imam Reza Shrine have been adorned with elaborate decorations.
According to Mehdi Haqtalab, head of the shrine’s lighting department, “some 45,000 meters of colorful string lights have been installed across central courtyards, including Ghadir, Kowsar, Tusi, Nawab, and Tabarsi. A special Eid al-Adha banner, measuring 5.5 by 13 meters, has also been placed at the entrance of the Enghelab Courtyard”.
Haqtalab emphasized the dedicated efforts of over 800 shrine servants, who contributed to the beautification process, aiming to create a joyful and spiritually uplifting environment for pilgrims and visitors.
Simultaneously, floral arrangements have been introduced to mark Imamate Ten-Day Celebrations, with over 10,000 flower bushes enhancing the shrine’s courtyards and halls.
Hamidreza Salimi, head of floral design and landscaping, noted that artists from Isfahan have traveled to Mashhad to contribute their expertise in floral decoration.
“Vibrant flowers have been placed in strategic areas, including the water fountains of Azadi and Goharshad courtyards, the flower walls along Bab al-Salam, and the formal entrance pathways. Seasonal flowers such as ice plant, marigold, and geranium have been used to refresh the shrine’s floral displays, symbolizing spiritual renewal and divine beauty”, Salimi explained.
The floral arrangements aim to create a serene and welcoming atmosphere, allowing pilgrims to experience peace and devotion during their visit.
The decorations serve as a tribute to Imam Reza and a reflection of the sacred significance of Eid al-Adha and Eid al-Ghadir.
Eid al-Adha (10th of Dhu al-Hijjah), also known as the Festival of Sacrifice, is one of the two major Islamic celebrations. It commemorates Prophet Ibrahim’s (Abraham’s) unwavering devotion to God, demonstrated by his willingness to sacrifice his son in obedience to divine command. According to Islamic tradition, God replaced his son with a ram, signifying mercy and faith.
Eid al-Ghadir is a significant occasion in Shia Islam, marking the event when Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) publicly declared Imam Ali as his successor at a place known as Ghadir Khumm. This declaration, made on 18th of Dhu al-Hijjah, is considered a foundational moment for Shia Muslims, affirming the leadership of Imam Ali.
