Razavi Hospital’s nuclear medicine, a safe haven for cancer patients

As the biggest and most advanced nuclear medicine center in the country’s east, Razavi Hospital’s nuclear medicine ward has been able to provide treatment services for the cancerous patients by producing ten radiopharmaceuticals.

In contrast to other Iranian medical centers, Razavi University is equipped with cyclotron unit and is able to produce its needed radiopharmaceuticals.

Talking about different services of Razavi University’s nuclear medicine ward, Dr. Nasim Nowrouzbeigi, head of the center, said: “The center offers its services in three separate sections of diagnostic imaging, cyclotron, and treatment”.

She reiterated: “Razavi Hospital is the only medical center of the country which can give PET/ CT services to the people suffering from different types of cancer. Something between 120 and 150 PET scans are done every day now”.

Dr. Nowrouzbeigi went on to say: “The hospital reached great breakthroughs between 2020 and 2022 in the area of producing radiopharmaceuticals as it reached number of its radiopharmaceuticals to 10 by producing six more”.

Referring to production of two new pharmaceuticals for scanning brain tumors and all types of cancers, head of the center said: “All these have been produced by the endeavors of Iranian young specialists of nuclear medicine”.

Elsewhere in her remarks, Dr. Nowrouzbeigi said: “Ga68-Citrate has been produced for the first time in Iran by the cyclotron unit of Razavi Hospital. This pharmaceutical has a very valuable application in the diagnosis of soft and hard tissue infections. Also, Ga-FAPI is a very important radiopharmaceutical in the diagnosis of a wide range of cancers in a way it is used to diagnose or check the response to treatment”.

She also stressed: “With respect to great position of Razavi Hospital in Iran, number of patients coming to the nuclear medicine ward of the hospital is increasing every day in a way that cyclotron unit of the hospital is producing different radiopharmaceuticals every day”.

Head of nuclear medicine ward of the Razavi Hospital added: “With respect to the nature of the rendered services, all protective measures have been taken with regard to the radiation and sanitation of the rooms”.

Pointing to steps taken for producing new pharmaceuticals in last five months, she said: “The center is trying to buy a "module for production of radiopharmaceuticals" because equipping the nuclear medicine department of Razavi Hospital with this module will make a big leap in the production of radiopharmaceuticals”.

This center offers its services since seven in the morning up to seven in the afternoon.
