On the eve of the Nights of Qadr and the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Ali, the shrine has been adorned in black as a symbol of mourning.
Starting from March 20, the shrine's dome and courtyards have been transformed into a unified display of grief.
The shrine’s servants have replaced the flag on the dome with a black one, while the shrine's sacred enclosure, entrance flags, minarets, and water fountains have also been covered in black.
Four large banners featuring elegies and phrases fitting these sombre days have been installed on the portals of courtyards.
Black flags encircling the courtyards have infused a deeply mournful atmosphere for pilgrims and locals visiting the shrine to participate in commemorations for Imam Ali and to express condolences to Imam Reza.
The special programs for the first blessed Night of Qadr kicked off on March 20, at 20:30 in Imam Khomeini Portico.
The ceremony started with the recitation of Quranic verses, followed by Joshan Kabir prayer.
The night will also include a speech and a ritual marked by mourners’ holding Quran on their head.

Imam Reza shrine, northeast Iran, prepares for mourning ceremonies by dressing its dome, courtyards, and holy spaces in black to mark Nights of Qadr (Nights of Destiny, 19, 21 and 23 Ramadan), which coincide with the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Ali, first Shia Imam.
